People with schizophrenia often have hallucinations in public and around other people. A lot of the time these hallucinations can cause them to worry, fear, or even harm. Many people with this disorder would be appreciative if they were told that what they are seeing is not real.
People with schizophrenia sometimes find a decrease or inability to initiate plans, conversations, and find pleasure or even express emotions at times. It is important to have empathy and compassion when you’re friends with someone with schizophrenia. It is very unlikely that you’ll be able to understand what they go through on a daily basis. Learn to listen to their needs.
This group is one of the highest risk groups for suicide and self-harm. There are many factors as to why this is a reality including their symptoms and persistent misunderstanding from others in society.
This group has one of the most complex mental disorders that is still being understood more and more each day. It is easy for them to feel withdrawn due to a general lack of understanding from society about their disorder, as well as dealing with their symptoms on a daily basis.
All though all of these are great ways to support someone with schizophrenia there are so many more ways. For example, you could donate to organizations that are supporting research into the disorder. You can find a list of places to donate to in the ‘Giving Back’ section.
