The saying that “people with schizophrenia are innately dangerous and violent” is a horrific stereotype that people with schizophrenia are dealing with every day. We adopted that concept from popular ill-informed media such as horror movies that feed off of villainizing innocent people with this disorder.
While violent behavior towards others by those with schizophrenia is pretty rare, if someone were to become violent, it would be towards a loved one and not a random person that’s just walking down the street. It is much more common for those with schizophrenia to initiate in self-harm than the harming of others.
People suffering from schizophrenia have problems with concentration, attention, memory and may suffer from a declining educational performance. Although this disorder can affect their ability to learn, that does not mean that those with this disorder would naturally have difficultly spelling.
Each case of schizophrenia is different from each other. Symptoms can vary in intensity and some can be non-existent in some people. This aspect is one of the reasons that this disorder is so complex.
